KUDOS from Kelly

by Kelly McNamara

Charles Darko: We very rarely have a request for a male caregiver. Women clients prefer women caregivers ands most men have been cared for by women most of their lives. But Charles, referred to us by his wife, was worth taking a chance on. He presented well. He is a kind, compassionate, seasoned caregiver. His understanding of dementia and the attending issues was very impressive. He was soft-spoken, open to learning, appeared to be an excellent worker. In addition, he is a pastor in his spare time and brings a special spirituality to his life and his work.

The dilemma then became, Who to place this amazing man with?? Which of our clients would be a good match? Then a brainstorm…Mr. S ! This man is very special to us and he needed a very attentive, patient and calm caregiver for long nights to keep him company, maintain his safety and equally important, allow his lovely wife to have some much deserved uninterrupted sleep. We asked Mrs. S as well as her daughter and they both decided that Charles was worth a try at this case. The rest, as they say, is history. Charles and Mr. S quickly bonded with a deep mutual respect and the kind of chemistry we always hope for with clients. Charles is calm, reassuring but always watching out for Mr. S’s safety and comfort. And, as we recently learned, is quite an accomplished dancer. He and Mr. S have a delightful time dancing as a pre bedtime or post breakfast routine. It is a joyful sight for us since Mrs. S happily shares the videos of their performance. Many, many thanks to you Charles for being just the right caregiver at the perfect time. And we all appreciate your many blessings as well!

All caregivers mentioned in this column will receive a gift card and our sincere appreciation! Many many thanks to all of you for once again extending yourselves to ensure that we are of course Always There…!! ■
